How to find me
Please note that I moved to the Universität zu Köln, so that the following description is outdated. Consult the following description.
Due to the somewhat labyrinthic arrangement of the buildings of the Technische Universität Darmstadt in which the physics department is in, it is a kind of formidable challenge to find the building S2 05 and my room S2 05/106. The following description hopefully helps you to meet this challenge.
- Arriving by plane
The nearest airport is Frankfurt/Main (its international airport code is FRA). After arrival in Frankfurt/Main airport, it is recommended to take the convenient bus shuttle AirLiner to Darmstadt central station (Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof or Darmstadt Hbf). Tickets are sold in the bus and are also valid for a connecting tram and bus in Darmstadt. The bus departures both in front of Terminal 1 (arrival area B, bus stop 15) and Terminal 2 (arrival area E) and stops aside of the central station's main exit. Continue at Arriving by train.
- Arriving by train
After arriving in Darmstadt central station (Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof or Darmstadt Hbf), go upstairs to the bridge crossing the tracks and turn left. After leaving the train station at the main exit, go straight ahead to the tram and bus stop. On the way, buy a ticket at the vending machine if you do not yet have one, the code for Darmstadt city is 4001 (tickets can be bought in the first coach of the tram and in the bus as well). Either take tram 3 towards Lichtenbergschule, tram 5 towards Kranichstein, or bus K towards TU Lichtwiese, and leave it at the stop Louisenplatz. Continue at From the Louisenplatz to my room.
- From the Louisenplatz to my room
If you are at the Louisenplatz, go towards the Darmstädter Schloß (look up to the man on the pillar, the Darmstädter Schloß is in his shoulders). Then, when directly facing the Darmstädter Schloß, turn left to the monument showing a man on a horse and pass it towards the Hessische Landesmuseum (standing in front of the Darmstädter Schloß, you should see the tower of the Hessische Landesmuseum around 100 m away). Right in front of the Hessische Landesmuseum, there is a one-way street (the Zeughausstraße, do not get confused by the fact that the sign at the light claims Friedensplatz, this is just the square in front of the Hessische Landesmuseum), which you have to cross. Pass the Hessische Landesmuseum on its right side (you should see the light-yellow/white Hessische Staatsarchiv at your right hand) and enter the park directly ahead (the so-called Herrngarten). Right at the entrance, the way forks, take the paved one turning right and cross the whole park (approximately 1 min walking). At the park's exit, there is the corner of a building of red brickstones at your left. Walk directly along the left side of this red building towards the entrance of the Großer Physikhörsaal. Do not enter there but the small door on your right side, where there is a red square sign indicating that you are entering building S2 07.
Inside the building, there are large stairs going up at your left hand, which you have to take (not the smaller one straight ahead). There is also an elevator in the dead-end at your left hand before the stairs. One floor up, facing the grey announcement board (there is also a white one) turn right, pass through a large glass door and through two consecutive large metal fire doors (right before the two metal fire doors, there is the elevator mentioned before at your left hand). Although there is no sign to tell you, you have now entered building S2 06. Turn immediatly left, pass through two more doors (a wooden and a glass one) right after each other, and turn right (at your left hand, there is a big glass window now). After passing the floor towards a blue announcement board, turn right and immediatly left through another fire door. Again without any sign telling you, you have entered building S2 05. In the narrow floor ahead, walk until the stairs at the very end. My room is the last one before the stairs on the left side, office S2/05 106.
